What is Geography?

Geography is the study of the spatial organization of human activity and of people's relationships with their environments. Unlike other social sciences, geography is fundamentally concerned with space and place — where things are, why they are there, and how they relate to each other across distances. Geographers analyze patterns, processes, and the connections between human societies and the physical landscapes they inhabit. The discipline bridges the natural sciences and the social sciences, making it one of the most integrative fields of study.

The word geography comes from the Greek ge (Earth) and graphia (writing or description). Early geographers were primarily mapmakers and explorers, but modern geography has evolved into a rigorous analytical science. Today's geographers use quantitative data, satellite imagery, and computational tools to understand spatial phenomena ranging from global migration flows to neighborhood-level demographic changes.


Geographic Perspectives and Concepts
Space and Place

Space refers to the physical gap or distance between two or more objects or phenomena. Geographers study how space organizes human activity — why cities develop where they do, how trade routes form, and why populations cluster in certain regions. Space is abstract and mathematical; it can be measured in absolute terms using coordinate systems.

Place is a specific point on Earth distinguished by a particular character. Every place has both physical characteristics (landforms, climate, vegetation) and human/cultural characteristics (language, religion, architecture, demographics). The concept of place is deeply personal — people develop a sense of place, which is the subjective feeling and attachment individuals have toward a particular location. A place can be meaningful to someone because of childhood memories, cultural significance, or aesthetic beauty.

The distinction between space and place is fundamental to human geography. Space becomes place through human experience, meaning-making, and cultural inscription. A generic field becomes a "place" when people name it, build on it, tell stories about it, and invest it with emotional significance.

Scale

Scale is the relationship between the portion of Earth being studied and Earth as a whole. Geographers work across multiple scales:

  • Global scale: Patterns and processes that affect the entire world, such as climate change, global trade networks, or the spread of pandemics.
  • Regional scale: Patterns within a larger area that shares common characteristics, such as the Middle East, Sub-Saharan Africa, or the Rust Belt of the United States.
  • National scale: Patterns within a single country, such as population distribution across China or agricultural zones within Brazil.
  • Local scale: Patterns within a specific community or neighborhood, such as land use in a single city block.

    Understanding scale is critical because processes observed at one scale may not apply at another. For example, global patterns of migration look different when examined at the national or local level. Geographers must be careful about scale generalization — applying conclusions from one scale to another without adequate evidence.

Patterns and Spatial Distribution

Geographers identify spatial patterns — the regular arrangement of phenomena across Earth's surface. Common types of spatial distribution include:

  • Clustered/Concentrated: Features grouped tightly together (e.g., fast-food restaurants along a highway corridor).
  • Dispersed/Scattered: Features spread out (e.g., farmhouses in the American Midwest).
  • Linear: Features arranged in a line (e.g., cities along the Nile River).
  • Random: No discernible pattern (rare in human geography, as human activity is rarely truly random).

    Identifying spatial patterns is the first step in geographic analysis. Once a pattern is identified, geographers seek to explain it by examining the underlying processes — the human and physical forces that produced the observed pattern.

Types of Maps and Map Projections
Map Types

Geographers use various types of maps depending on the information being conveyed:

  • Reference maps: Show the locations of places and geographic features (e.g., road maps, political maps, topographic maps). They are designed for general orientation and navigation.
  • Thematic maps: Display data about a specific topic or theme (e.g., population density maps, climate maps, election result maps). Thematic maps are the primary tool for showing spatial patterns in human geography.

    Common thematic map types include:

  • Choropleth maps: Use shading or coloring to represent data values for defined areas (countries, states, provinces). Darker shades typically indicate higher values. Limitations include the fact that large areas with small populations can be visually misleading.
  • Isoline maps: Use lines connecting points of equal value (e.g., isotherms for temperature, isobars for atmospheric pressure, contour lines for elevation).
  • Dot density maps: Use dots to represent the frequency of a phenomenon. Each dot may represent a specific quantity (e.g., one dot = 10,000 people). These maps show density patterns effectively.
  • Proportional symbol maps: Use symbols (often circles) sized in proportion to the data value they represent. Larger symbols indicate larger values.
  • Flow maps: Show movement of people, goods, or ideas between places, with line thickness or arrow size indicating volume.
Map Projections

Because Earth is a three-dimensional sphere and maps are two-dimensional, all map projections involve some distortion. The three properties that can be distorted are:

  1. Area (equivalence): Does the map preserve the relative sizes of landmasses?
  2. Shape (conformality): Does the map preserve the shapes of landmasses?
  3. Distance (equidistance): Does the map preserve accurate distances between points?

    No projection can preserve all three simultaneously. Key projections include:

  4. Mercator projection: A cylindrical conformal projection that preserves shape but greatly distorts area, especially near the poles. Greenland appears larger than Africa on a Mercator map, though Africa is actually 14 times larger. This projection was historically useful for navigation because lines of constant compass bearing (rhumb lines) appear as straight lines.
  5. Robinson projection: A compromise projection that minimizes distortion of all three properties but preserves none perfectly. It is widely used for world maps in textbooks and atlases.
  6. Mollweide projection: An equal-area projection that preserves area but distorts shape. It is useful for showing global distributions of phenomena like population or climate zones.
  7. Gall-Peters projection: Another equal-area projection that has been promoted as a more equitable alternative to the Mercator projection, which critics argue perpetuates a Eurocentric worldview by exaggerating the size of high-latitude (predominantly Western) countries.

    The choice of map projection is not neutral — it reflects and reinforces particular perspectives. Geographers must be aware of how projection choices influence the message a map conveys.

Geographic Tools and Technologies
Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

A Geographic Information System (GIS) is a computer system that captures, stores, queries, analyzes, and displays geographically referenced data. GIS layers multiple types of data (demographics, land use, infrastructure, environmental conditions) on top of a base map, allowing users to identify spatial relationships that would be invisible in tabular data alone.

GIS is used extensively in urban planning, public health, environmental management, logistics, and business analysis. For example, a public health official might use GIS to map disease outbreaks and identify environmental factors correlated with infection rates. A retail company might use GIS to identify optimal locations for new stores based on population density, income levels, and competitor locations.

Remote Sensing

Remote sensing is the acquisition of data about Earth's surface from a satellite orbiting the planet or from sensors on high-altitude aircraft. Remote sensing provides images and data that can be used to monitor environmental changes (deforestation, urban sprawl, crop health), track weather patterns, and map land cover.

Satellite imagery can capture different wavelengths of light beyond the visible spectrum, including infrared and thermal bands. These additional data layers allow scientists to detect phenomena invisible to the human eye, such as vegetation stress, water pollution, and heat island effects in urban areas.

Global Positioning System (GPS)

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a system of satellites that orbit Earth and transmit signals that can be received by GPS devices to determine the exact location (latitude, longitude, and sometimes elevation) of the receiver. GPS provides real-time locational data and is used for navigation, surveying, tracking, and mapping.

GPS is distinct from GIS: GPS collects positional data, while GIS stores, analyzes, and displays that data. The two technologies are often used together — GPS data can be imported into a GIS for further analysis.


Mental Maps

A mental map is an internal representation of a place that a person carries in their mind. Mental maps are shaped by personal experience, media exposure, cultural background, and education. They influence how people navigate, make decisions about where to live and travel, and perceive the relative importance of different places.

Mental maps reveal biases and knowledge gaps. For example, many Americans can mentally map the locations of East Coast states with far greater accuracy than Central Asian countries, reflecting the influence of media attention and educational emphasis. Mental maps are useful in geography because they help researchers understand how people perceive space and place.


Environmental Determinism vs. Possibilism
Environmental Determinism

Environmental determinism is the theory that the physical environment, rather than human decisions, is the primary determinant of human behavior and cultural development. This theory, popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, argued that climate and geography shaped racial characteristics, cultural achievements, and societal development.

Environmental determinism has been widely discredited and is now regarded as ethnocentric and scientifically flawed. It was used to justify colonialism and racism by suggesting that people from tropical climates were inherently less capable of civilization than those from temperate zones. However, the basic insight that the physical environment constrains and influences human activity remains valid.

Possibilism

Possibilism is the theory that the physical environment may limit some human actions, but people have the ability to adjust to their environment and choose among alternatives. The environment offers a range of possibilities — human culture, technology, and decisions determine which possibilities are realized.

For example, the physical environment of the Netherlands includes low-lying land vulnerable to flooding. Environmental determinism would suggest this limits Dutch development. Possibilism points out that the Dutch have adapted through dikes, polders, and advanced water management systems, creating one of the most prosperous nations in Europe despite environmental challenges.

Cultural Ecology

Cultural ecology examines the relationship between a culture and its natural environment. It recognizes that humans both shape and are shaped by their environment, seeking a middle ground between environmental determinism and possibilism. Cultural ecologists study how societies adapt their practices — agriculture, housing, clothing, social organization — to local environmental conditions.

Unit 2: Population and Migration

Population Distribution and Density

Human population is unevenly distributed across Earth's surface. Approximately 90% of the world's population lives north of the equator, and roughly two-thirds live within 500 kilometers of a coastline. The most densely populated areas include East Asia (eastern China, Japan, South Korea), South Asia (India, Bangladesh, Pakistan), and Western Europe. Sparsely populated areas include deserts (Sahara, Arabian, Australian), polar regions, dense tropical rainforests (Amazon, Congo), and high mountain ranges.

Geographers measure population density in several ways:

  • Arithmetic (crude) density: The total number of people divided by the total land area. For example, if a country has 100 million people in 500,000 square kilometers, its arithmetic density is 200 people per square kilometer. This is the simplest measure but can be misleading because it does not account for the fact that much of a country's land may be uninhabitable.
  • Physiological density: The number of people per unit of arable (farmable) land. This is a more meaningful measure of population pressure on agricultural resources. Egypt, for example, has a moderate arithmetic density but an extremely high physiological density because most of the country is desert, and the population is concentrated in the narrow Nile River valley.
  • Agricultural density: The number of farmers per unit of arable land. This measure indicates the efficiency of the agricultural system. Developed countries typically have low agricultural densities (few farmers feeding many people using mechanized agriculture), while developing countries often have high agricultural densities (many farmers using labor-intensive methods to feed fewer people).

    Understanding these different density measures is critical for analyzing the relationship between population and resources, a theme that runs throughout AP Human Geography.

Population Composition and Population Pyramids

Population composition refers to the characteristics of a population, including age, sex, education level, income, occupation, and other demographic variables. The most fundamental tool for visualizing population composition is the population pyramid (also called an age-sex pyramid).

A population pyramid is a horizontal bar graph that shows the percentage or absolute number of males and females in each age cohort (typically in five-year increments). The x-axis shows the population count or percentage, the y-axis shows age groups, males are shown on the left, and females on the right.

There are three basic shapes of population pyramids, each corresponding to a different stage of development:

  1. Expansive pyramid (wide base, narrow top): Indicates a population with a high birth rate, high death rate, and short life expectancy. The wide base shows many young people, and the narrow top shows few elderly. This shape is typical of developing countries in early stages of the Demographic Transition Model (Stages 1 and 2). Examples include Niger, Uganda, and Afghanistan.
  2. Constrictive pyramid (narrow base, wider middle and top): Indicates a declining birth rate, low death rate, and long life expectancy. Fewer children are being born, and more people are living to old age. This shape is typical of developed countries in later stages of the Demographic Transition Model (Stages 4 and 5). Examples include Japan, Germany, and Italy.
  3. Stationary pyramid (relatively even distribution): Indicates a population with low birth and death rates and a stable size. The sides are roughly straight, creating a rectangular shape. This is typical of countries in Stage 3 or early Stage 4 of the Demographic Transition Model. Examples include the United States, Australia, and France.

    Population pyramids can also reveal historical events. A "bulge" in a specific age cohort might reflect a baby boom, while a depression (indentation) in a cohort might reflect a war, famine, or period of economic hardship that reduced births or increased deaths for that generation.

The Demographic Transition Model

The Demographic Transition Model (DTM) describes the historical shift from high birth and death rates to low birth and death rates as a country develops from a pre-industrial to an industrialized economic system. The model was developed based on the historical experience of Western Europe and North America.

Stage 1: High Stationary
  • Both birth rates and death rates are high (around 30–40 per 1,000).
  • Population growth is very slow or nonexistent.
  • Societies are typically pre-industrial, agrarian, and have limited medical technology.
  • High birth rates are offset by high infant mortality, disease, famine, and war.
  • No contemporary countries are in Stage 1. Historical examples include pre-industrial Europe and many hunter-gatherer societies.
Stage 2: Early Expanding
  • Death rates drop rapidly due to improvements in medicine, sanitation, nutrition, and public health.
  • Birth rates remain high.
  • Population grows rapidly (natural increase rate is high).
  • The gap between birth and death rates is at its widest.
  • Many Sub-Saharan African countries are in Stage 2 (e.g., Niger, Mali, Chad), though some are transitioning to Stage 3.
Stage 3: Late Expanding
  • Birth rates begin to decline significantly due to increased access to contraception, education (especially of women), urbanization, and changing economic incentives.
  • Death rates continue to decline but at a slower pace.
  • Population growth rate begins to slow.
  • Many countries in Latin America, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East are in Stage 3 (e.g., Brazil, Mexico, India, Egypt).
Stage 4: Low Stationary
  • Both birth rates and death rates are low (around 10–15 per 1,000).
  • Population growth is very slow or zero (zero population growth).
  • Societies are highly industrialized and urbanized.
  • Examples include the United States, Canada, Australia, and most of Western Europe.
Stage 5: Declining
  • Death rates exceed birth rates, leading to population decline.
  • Total fertility rate falls below replacement level (2.1 children per woman).
  • This is a relatively recent phenomenon observed in Japan, Germany, Italy, South Korea, and Russia.
  • Governments may implement pro-natalist policies to encourage childbearing.

    Limitations of the DTM: The model is based on Western European experience and may not accurately describe the demographic transitions of all countries. Some developing countries have experienced rapid decline in birth rates due to government intervention (e.g., China's one-child policy), bypassing some stages. The model does not account for migration, which can significantly affect population change.

Malthusian Theory and Its Critics

Thomas Malthus, an English economist writing in 1798, argued that population grows geometrically (exponentially: 1, 2, 4, 8, 16...) while food production grows arithmetically (linearly: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5...). He predicted that population would eventually outstrip food supply, leading to "positive checks" (famine, disease, war) that would reduce the population.

Critics of Malthus point out that:

  • Food production has grown faster than Malthus predicted due to the Green Revolution, biotechnology, and improved agricultural practices.
  • Population growth has slowed significantly in most parts of the world due to the demographic transition.
  • Malthus underestimated the capacity for technological innovation and human adaptation.
  • His theory has been used to justify policies that limit aid to developing countries, which critics argue is unethical.

    Neo-Malthusians, such as Paul Ehrlich (author of The Population Bomb, 1968), argue that while Malthus's timing was wrong, his fundamental logic remains valid. They point to resource depletion, environmental degradation, and climate change as evidence that Earth's carrying capacity is being approached or exceeded.

Migration
Types of Migration

Migration is a form of spatial mobility involving a permanent or semi-permanent move to a new location. Geographers distinguish between:

  • Internal migration: Movement within a single country (e.g., rural-to-urban migration in China, the Great Migration of African Americans from the rural South to northern cities in the United States).
  • International migration: Movement across national borders (e.g., migration from Mexico to the United States, Syrian refugees fleeing to Turkey and Europe).
  • Forced migration: Movement that is not voluntary, caused by conflict, persecution, environmental disaster, or government policy (e.g., the Atlantic slave trade, Syrian refugees, climate displacement).
  • Voluntary migration: Movement by choice, typically motivated by economic opportunity, family reunification, or quality of life.
  • Chain migration: A pattern in which migrants from a particular area follow others from that area to the same destination, creating migrant networks.
  • Step migration: Migration that occurs in stages, from a rural village to a small town to a larger city, rather than directly from origin to destination.
  • Transhumance: Seasonal movement of livestock and herders between fixed summer and winter pastures.
Push and Pull Factors

Push factors are conditions that drive people to leave their current location:

  • Economic: Poverty, unemployment, lack of economic opportunity
  • Political: War, persecution, political instability, lack of freedom
  • Environmental: Natural disasters, drought, famine, climate change

    Pull factors are conditions that attract people to a new location:

Ravenstein's Laws of Migration

Ernest Ravenstein, a German-English geographer, identified several "laws" of migration in the 1880s that remain influential:

  1. Most migration occurs over short distances.
  2. Migration occurs in steps (step migration).
  3. Long-distance migrants typically move to major urban centers.
  4. Urban residents are less migratory than rural residents.
  5. Women are more migratory than men over short distances, but men are more migratory over long distances.
  6. Most migration is from rural to urban areas.
  7. Economic factors are the primary cause of migration.
Government Migration Policies

Countries use various policies to manage migration:

What is Culture?

Culture is not innate or genetic — it is acquired through socialization and experience.

Geographers distinguish between two fundamental aspects of culture:

  • Material culture: The physical objects, resources, and spaces that people use to define their culture. This includes tools, buildings, clothing, food, and technology. The built environment (houses, temples, streets, monuments) is a visible expression of material culture.
  • Nonmaterial culture: The intangible aspects of culture, including beliefs, values, norms, language, religion, ideas, and knowledge systems. Nonmaterial culture shapes how people interpret the world and guides behavior.

    The concept of a cultural landscape, first articulated by geographer Carl Sauer, is central to human geography. A cultural landscape is the visible imprint of human activity on the landscape. Every modification of the natural environment — from clearing forests for agriculture to building skyscrapers — reflects cultural values, technologies, and economic systems. Studying cultural landscapes allows geographers to read the history and identity of a place.

Cultural Diffusion

Cultural diffusion is the spread of cultural beliefs and social activities from one group to another. Diffusion is a fundamental process in human geography because it explains how cultural traits — ideas, technologies, religions, languages, foods, and practices — spread across space and time.

Types of Diffusion
  1. Relocation diffusion: The physical spread of a cultural trait through the movement of people. When migrants carry their cultural practices to a new location, they introduce those practices to the host society. For example, the spread of Islam from the Arabian Peninsula to North Africa and Southeast Asia occurred primarily through relocation diffusion as Muslim traders, scholars, and conquerors moved to new regions. Similarly, the spread of Mexican cuisine to the United States has occurred largely through Mexican immigration.
  2. Expansion diffusion: The spread of a cultural trait from a central point outward through a snowballing effect, where the number of people adopting the trait increases. The original carriers of the trait do not need to move. Expansion diffusion has three subtypes:

    a. Hierarchical diffusion: The spread of a cultural trait from persons of authority or influence to other people, or from large cities to smaller towns. Fashion trends often spread hierarchically — a style may originate in Paris or New York, be adopted by celebrities and fashion elites, then spread to the general public. Corporate headquarters decisions also spread hierarchically from central offices to regional offices to local branches.

    b. Contagious diffusion: The widespread, rapid diffusion of a cultural trait throughout a population, similar to the spread of a contagious disease. Contagious diffusion occurs through person-to-person contact without regard to social status or hierarchy. Viral internet trends, slang, and popular songs often spread through contagious diffusion.

    c. Stimulus diffusion: The spread of an underlying principle or idea, even though the specific trait itself does not spread. A culture may adopt a general concept and modify it to fit local conditions. For example, McDonald's restaurants exist worldwide, but the menu varies significantly by country — McSpicy Paneer in India, Teriyaki McBurger in Japan, the McArabia in the Middle East. The underlying concept (fast-food restaurant) diffused, but the specific form was adapted locally.

  3. Maladaptive diffusion: The diffusion of a cultural trait that is harmful or not well-suited to the receiving environment. The adoption of Western-style clothing in tropical climates (suits and ties) or the diffusion of gas-guzzling SUVs to dense urban environments are examples of maladaptive diffusion.
Hearth

The hearth is the place of origin of a cultural trait. Hearth areas are typically centers of innovation where new ideas, technologies, or practices first emerge before diffusing outward. Key cultural hearths in human history include:

  • Agricultural hearths: The Fertile Crescent, the Yangtze and Yellow River valleys in China, the Indus River valley, Mesoamerica, and the Andes.
  • Religious hearths: Jerusalem and the eastern Mediterranean (Christianity, Judaism, Islam), the Ganges River valley (Hinduism, Buddhism), the Arabian Peninsula (Islam).
  • Technological hearths: Mesopotamia (writing, the wheel), China (paper, gunpowder, the compass), Europe (the printing press, the steam engine).
Folk Culture vs. Popular Culture

Geographers distinguish between folk culture (also called local culture or traditional culture) and popular culture (also called mass culture).

Folk Culture
  • Typically practiced by small, homogeneous, rural groups.
  • Transmitted orally or by example from generation to generation.
  • Strongly tied to a specific place and local environment.
  • Tends to change very slowly.
  • Examples: Amish communities in Pennsylvania, the Hmong in Southeast Asia, traditional Maasai pastoralists in East Africa.

Popular Culture
  • Found in large, heterogeneous societies.

  • Not strongly tied to place — popular culture diffuses rapidly across the globe.
  • Changes quickly; trends come and go rapidly.
  • Examples: Hollywood movies, K-pop music, global fast-food chains, international fashion brands.
  • Popular culture tends to create more uniform cultural landscapes — the same chain stores, restaurant brands, and architectural styles appear in cities worldwide.
Tensions Between Folk and Popular Culture

Popular culture often threatens folk culture through cultural homogenization — the process by which local cultural distinctiveness is eroded by the spread of globalized mass culture. Folk cultures may resist this through cultural preservation efforts, legal protections, and deliberate revival of traditional practices.

However, the relationship is not always one-directional. Popular culture frequently appropriates elements of folk culture (music, fashion, art, food) without proper acknowledgment or compensation. This raises questions about cultural appropriation, authenticity, and power dynamics in cultural exchange.


Religion

Religion is a fundamental component of nonmaterial culture and a powerful force shaping the cultural landscape. Geographers classify religions into two broad categories:

Universalizing Religions

Universalizing religions seek to appeal to all people, regardless of their cultural or ethnic background. They actively proselytize (seek converts). The three largest universalizing religions are:

    However, the Green Revolution also had significant negative consequences:

Von Thünen's Model

The First Urban Revolution

The first cities emerged independently in several regions approximately 5,000–7,000 years ago, during what geographers call the First Urban Revolution. The earliest cities developed in river valley civilizations:

  • Mesopotamia (Tigris and Euphrates rivers): Ur, Uruk, Babylon
  • Egypt (Nile River): Memphis, Thebes
  • Indus Valley: Mohenjo-Daro, Harappa
  • China (Yellow River): Anyang
  • Mesoamerica: Teotihuacan, Tikal

    Cities emerged where agricultural surpluses (produced by the First Agricultural Revolution) could support non-farming populations — artisans, merchants, priests, soldiers, and administrators. The social surplus allowed for the development of complex social hierarchies, writing systems, monumental architecture, and organized religion.

Site and Situation Factors

The location of cities is determined by site factors (the physical characteristics of the location) and situation factors (the city's position relative to other places):

Site factors include:

  • Access to water (rivers, lakes, coastlines) for drinking, irrigation, transportation, and defense

The Second Urban Revolution

The Second Urban Revolution was the rapid growth of cities associated with the Industrial Revolution (late 18th to 19th centuries). Industrialization drew rural populations to cities in massive numbers, creating unprecedented urban growth. Factory jobs, improved transportation (railroads, steamships), and the concentration of economic activity in industrial cities drove this transformation.

European cities grew enormously during this period — London grew from approximately 1 million in 1800 to over 6 million by 1900. In the United States, cities like New York, Chicago, and Pittsburgh exploded in size as millions of immigrants from Europe and migrants from rural America arrived seeking factory employment.


Urban Models

Urban models are simplified representations of the internal spatial structure of cities. They help geographers understand and predict patterns of land use within urban areas.

The Burgess Concentric Zone Model

Developed by sociologist Ernest Burgess in the 1920s based on his study of Chicago, the concentric zone model depicts a city as a series of concentric rings radiating outward from the central business district (CBD):

The Galactic City Model (Edge City Model)

Urban Sprawl and Smart Growth

Urban sprawl is the unplanned, low-density, automobile-dependent expansion of urban areas into surrounding rural land. Sprawl is characterized by:

  • Dependence on automobiles for virtually all trips

Semi-Periphery Countries

Semi-periphery countries occupy an intermediate position. They have some industrialization and economic development but are not as dominant as core countries. Semi-periphery countries may exploit periphery countries while being exploited by core countries. Examples include China, India, Brazil, Mexico, and South Korea.

Wallerstein's theory emphasizes that the global economy is not a level playing field — the wealth of core countries depends on the poverty of peripheral countries. The theory helps explain persistent global inequality and the difficulty peripheral countries face in achieving development.


Rostow's Stages of Growth Model

Economist W.W. Rostow proposed the Stages of Economic Growth Model in 1960, which describes a five-stage process through which all countries are presumed to pass on their way to development:

AP Human Geography — Audio Review Script

Welcome to your AP Human Geography audio review. This script is designed to be recorded and listened to as a comprehensive review covering all seven units. You can listen while commuting, exercising, or relaxing. I recommend listening to the full script once, then replaying sections where you feel less confident.

The AP Human Geography exam has two sections: 60 multiple-choice questions worth 50 percent of your score, and 3 free-response questions worth 50 percent. You have 60 minutes for multiple choice and 75 minutes for free response. Let's begin our review.


Unit 1: Thinking Geographically (4 minutes)

Geography is the study of where things are, why they are there, and how they relate to each other across space. The two most fundamental concepts are space and place. Space is the physical distance between phenomena — it is abstract and measurable. Place is a specific location that has been given meaning through human experience, culture, and emotion. A place has both physical site characteristics and cultural characteristics.

Scale matters in geography. A pattern observed at the global scale may look completely different at the local scale. Always pay attention to scale when analyzing geographic questions.

There are several types of thematic maps you need to know. Choropleth maps shade areas by data value — think of a map where countries are colored darker for higher literacy rates. Isoline maps connect points of equal value, like isotherms connecting equal temperatures. Dot density maps use dots to show frequency. Proportional symbol maps size symbols in proportion to data values. And flow maps show movement between places with line thickness indicating volume.

For map projections, remember: the Mercator projection preserves shape but distorts area — that is why Greenland looks enormous. The Robinson projection is a compromise. And the Mollweide and Gall-Peters projections preserve area but distort shape.

Geographic tools include GIS, which layers and analyzes geographic data on a computer. Remote sensing, which acquires data from satellites. And GPS, which determines exact location using satellite signals.

Finally, know the difference between environmental determinism and possibilism. Environmental determinism, now discredited, claimed the physical environment determines human behavior. Possibilism says the environment sets limits but humans choose among alternatives.


Unit 2: Population and Migration (6 minutes)

There are three types of population density. Arithmetic density divides total population by total land area. Physiological density divides population by arable land — this shows real pressure on agricultural resources. Agricultural density divides the number of farmers by arable land.

Population pyramids are horizontal bar graphs showing age and sex distribution. An expansive pyramid with a wide base indicates a young, fast-growing population in Stage 2 of the Demographic Transition Model. A constrictive pyramid with a narrow base indicates an aging, declining population in Stage 5. A stationary pyramid is roughly rectangular, indicating stability in Stage 4.

The Demographic Transition Model has five stages. Stage 1: high birth and death rates, no growth. Stage 2: death rates fall rapidly, birth rates stay high, rapid growth. Stage 3: birth rates begin to fall, growth slows. Stage 4: both rates are low, stable population. Stage 5: birth rates fall below replacement level, population declines.

Malthus argued population grows exponentially while food grows arithmetically, leading to inevitable famine. Critics note technology has outpaced his predictions, but neo-Malthusians point to climate change and resource depletion as modern concerns.

For migration, remember push factors drive people away — war, poverty, persecution, disaster. Pull factors attract them — jobs, freedom, safety, family. Key migration types include chain migration, where migrants follow others from their area; step migration, where moves happen in stages; and forced migration, where people flee against their will.

Ravenstein's laws tell us: most migration is short-distance, rural-to-urban, and economically motivated. Brain drain is the emigration of educated professionals, which deprives developing countries of skilled workers.


Unit 3: Cultural Patterns and Processes (5 minutes)

Culture is learned, shared, and transmitted. Material culture is the physical stuff — buildings, tools, clothing. Nonmaterial culture is beliefs, values, language, religion. The cultural landscape is the visible imprint of human activity on the land.

Cultural diffusion is the spread of cultural traits. Relocation diffusion happens when people physically carry a trait to a new place. Expansion diffusion has three subtypes. Hierarchical diffusion spreads from authority or large cities downward. Contagious diffusion spreads rapidly person-to-person, like a viral trend. Stimulus diffusion spreads an underlying idea that gets adapted locally — like how fast food spread globally but menus changed per country.

Folk culture is local, rural, place-tied, and slow-changing. Popular culture is urban, mass-media-driven, global, and fast-changing. Popular culture often threatens folk culture through homogenization.

For religion, universalizing religions seek converts worldwide — Christianity, Islam, and Buddhism. Ethnic religions are tied to a specific group — Hinduism, Judaism, Shinto. Know that Christianity has about 2.4 billion adherents, Islam about 1.9 billion, and Hinduism about 1.2 billion.

For language, the Indo-European family is the largest with about 45 percent of speakers. A lingua franca is a common language used between people who speak different native languages. Approximately 7,000 languages exist today, but many face extinction.


Unit 4: Political Organization of Space (5 minutes)

A state is a country with sovereignty over its territory. A nation is a cultural group with shared identity. A nation-state is where the two match — Japan is the closest example. A stateless nation lacks its own state — the Kurds are the classic example. A multinational state contains multiple nations — the United Kingdom with English, Scottish, Welsh, and Northern Irish peoples.

Boundary types include physical boundaries using natural features, cultural boundaries based on ethnicity or religion, and geometric boundaries drawn as straight lines.

For boundary evolution: antecedent boundaries existed before settlement, subsequent boundaries evolved with the cultural landscape, superimposed boundaries were drawn by outside powers ignoring local patterns — think colonial Africa, and relic boundaries no longer function as international borders — think the Berlin Wall.

Centripetal forces unify a state: shared identity, effective government, infrastructure, external threats. Centrifugal forces divide: ethnic conflict, inequality, separatism, corruption. When centrifugal forces dominate, devolution occurs — the transfer of power from central to regional governments.

Supranationalism is when states surrender some sovereignty for cooperation. The European Union is the most advanced example, with shared markets, a common currency, and supranational institutions.


Unit 5: Agriculture and Rural Land-Use (4 minutes)

Agriculture originated independently in several hearths: the Fertile Crescent gave us wheat and barley; Mesoamerica gave us corn; the Yangtze Valley gave us rice; the Andes gave us potatoes.

The First Agricultural Revolution was the initial domestication of plants and animals. The Second Agricultural Revolution in the 18th and 19th centuries brought improved crop rotation, selective breeding, and machinery. The Green Revolution from the 1940s to 1970s introduced high-yield crop varieties, chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and irrigation, dramatically increasing food production but also causing environmental damage and social inequality.

Von Thunen's model arranges agriculture in concentric rings around a market town. Dairy is closest because milk is perishable. Then timber because it is heavy. Then grain. Then livestock in the outermost ring because animals can walk to market. The key principle is that transportation cost determines location.

Subsistence agriculture includes shifting cultivation, intensive rice farming, and pastoralism. Commercial agriculture includes mixed farming, dairy, grain, ranching, Mediterranean crops, and plantations.


Unit 6: Cities and Urban Land-Use (5 minutes)

The First Urban Revolution produced the first cities about 5,000 to 7,000 years ago, made possible by agricultural surpluses. The Second Urban Revolution was the explosive growth of industrial cities in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Site factors are the physical characteristics of a city's location — water, soil, climate, defense. Situation factors are the city's position relative to other places.

There are four key urban models. Burgess created the concentric zone model with rings radiating from the CBD. Hoyt created the sector model with wedge-shaped sectors along transportation corridors. Harris and Ullman created the multiple nuclei model recognizing multiple centers of activity. And Garreau created the galactic city model for modern post-industrial cities with edge cities connected by highway beltways.

Gentrification is when wealthier residents move into a neighborhood, renovating housing and raising costs, which can displace lower-income residents. Urban sprawl is low-density, auto-dependent expansion. Smart growth counters sprawl with mixed-use, transit-oriented development.

A megacity has over 10 million people. A primate city is disproportionately larger than other cities in its country, like Bangkok or Paris. The rank-size rule states the nth largest city is one-nth the size of the largest.


Unit 7: Industrial and Economic Development (5 minutes)

The Industrial Revolution began in Great Britain because of coal and iron resources, capital from colonial trade, political stability, technological innovation, and available labor.

Industrial location depends on situation factors like proximity to markets and inputs, and site factors like labor, capital, and land costs. Agglomeration is when related industries cluster together for mutual benefit — Silicon Valley is the classic example.

Wallerstein's World Systems Theory divides the global economy into core countries that dominate, periphery countries that are exploited, and semi-periphery countries in between. This theory argues global inequality is structural, not accidental.

Rostow's model proposes five stages of development: Traditional Society, Preconditions for Takeoff, Takeoff, Drive to Maturity, and Age of Mass Consumption. It is criticized as ethnocentric for presenting Western development as the universal ideal.

Development indicators include the Human Development Index, which combines life expectancy, education, and income. Other indicators are GNI per capita, literacy rate, and infant mortality rate. Investing in women's education and economic participation is one of the most powerful drivers of development.


Conclusion (2 minutes)

That completes our review of all seven units. Remember the key strategies for exam day: use specific geographic vocabulary on FRQs, provide specific country examples, explain your reasoning rather than just describing, and manage your time carefully — about one minute per multiple-choice question and 25 minutes per FRQ.
