AP Score Calculators FAQ
How accurate are these AP score calculators?
Our calculators model the exact multiple-choice and free-response weightings published in each official College Board Course & Exam Description (CED), combined with historically verified composite score cutoffs. While official cutoffs fluctuate slightly year-to-year based on psychometric equating, our models provide a highly reliable projection of where your practice scores will land.
Are AP exams graded on a curve?
No, AP exams are not graded on a traditional competitive curve where only a fixed percentage of students can pass. Instead, the College Board uses a criterion-referenced equating process. If every student in the country demonstrates college-level mastery, every student can earn a 5. Read our AP curve guide for a full breakdown.
Is there a guessing penalty on AP multiple-choice questions?
No. Since 2011, there is zero penalty for incorrect answers on all AP exams. Your raw multiple-choice score is simply the total number of questions answered correctly. Never leave an answer bubble blank. See our guessing penalty guide.
What composite percentage do I need to score a 5?
On most AP exams, the cutoff for a 5 is between 65% and 75% of total weighted composite points. Generous STEM subjects like AP Calculus BC or AP Physics C often require ~60-65%, while subjects like AP Environmental Science or AP Macroeconomics may require ~72-76%. Check our conversion charts for exact cutoffs.
Can I use a calculator on every AP exam?
No. Calculator policies vary strictly by course: graphing calculators are required on AP Calculus and AP Statistics, four-function calculators are permitted on AP Biology and AP Chemistry, and calculators are banned entirely on History, English, and Language exams. Consult our complete AP exam calculator policy before test day.
