What the math behind the estimate actually is
The projection works in three steps, and understanding them makes the number trustworthy. First, your multiple-choice correct count is converted to a percentage of the section. Next, that percentage is combined with your free-response points using the model’s section weights into one composite score. Finally, the composite is matched against the cutoff table (5, 4, 3, 2 thresholds) to return a band — which is exactly the pipeline the subject calculators use, just with generic defaults instead of your exam’s real ones.
When to trust it (and when to upgrade)
- Use the generic predictor for a fast first estimate — “am I in the 3-4 range or the 2-3 range?” — before you settle on a subject.
- Switch to the subject calculator the moment you’re prepping a specific exam, because real weights (40/60, 67/33, etc.) shift results several points.
- Remember the real curve is set after the exam. No tool, including this one, can know the official post-exam numbers in advance — treat every estimate, ours included, as a range-finder, not a guarantee.
