AP Music Theory develops students' understanding of musical structure, composition, and analysis. Unit 1: Pitch, Rhythm, and Meter

1. The Staff and Clefs
The Staff

The staff consists of five lines and four spaces. Notes are placed on lines and in spaces to indicate pitch. Higher notes are placed higher on the staff; lower notes are placed lower.

Clefs

Treble Clef (G Clef):

  • Wraps around the second line (G4 = 392 Hz)
  • Used for higher voices and instruments (violin, flute, right hand of piano, soprano/alto)
  • Lines (bottom to top): E4, G4, B4, D5, F5
  • Spaces (bottom to top): F4, A4, C5, E5
  • Mnemonic: Lines = "Every Good Boy Does Fine"; Spaces = "FACE"

    Bass Clef (F Clef):

  • Dots surround the fourth line (F3)
  • Used for lower voices and instruments (cello, bass, left hand of piano, tenor/bass)
  • Lines (bottom to top): G2, B2, D3, F3, A3
  • Spaces (bottom to top): A2, C3, E3, G3
  • Mnemonic: Lines = "Good Boys Do Fine Always"; Spaces = "All Cows Eat Grass"

    Alto Clef (C Clef):

  • Center of the clef marks middle C (C4) on the third line
  • Used primarily by viola

    Tenor Clef:

  • Center of the clef marks middle C (C4) on the fourth line
  • Used by cello, bassoon, and trombone for higher passages
Ledger Lines

Notes above or below the staff require short additional lines called ledger lines. Middle C (C4) sits on a single ledger line below the treble staff or above the bass staff.


2. Pitch Notation and Accidentals
Note Names

The musical alphabet consists of seven letter names: A, B, C, D, E, F, G. These repeat at each octave.

Accidentals
  • Sharp (#): Raises pitch by one half step
  • Flat (♭): Lowers pitch by one half step
  • Natural (♮): Cancels a previous sharp or flat
  • Double sharp (x): Raises by two half steps (one whole step)
  • Double flat (♭♭): Lowers by two half steps (one whole step)

    Accidentals placed within a measure affect only that measure. If a note with an accidental is tied to the next measure, the accidental carries over.

Enharmonic Equivalents

Notes that sound the same but are written differently:

  • C# = D♭
  • E# = F (on the keyboard)
  • B# = C (on the keyboard)
  • G♭ = F#
  • C♭ = B
The Chromatic Scale

A scale containing all 12 pitches within an octave, each one half step apart: C–C#/D♭–D–D#/E♭–E–F–F#/G♭–G–G#/A♭–A–A#/B♭–B–C


3. Scales
Major Scale (Ionian Mode)

Pattern: Whole – Whole – Half – Whole – Whole – Whole – Half

  • C Major: C – D – E – F – G – A – B – C (no sharps or flats)

    Key Signature Rules (Major Keys):

  • Sharps appear in order: F#, C#, G#, D#, A#, E#, B#
  • Flats appear in order: B♭, E♭, A♭, D♭, G♭, C♭, F♭
  • Mnemonic for sharps: "Father Charles Goes Down And Ends Battle"
  • Mnemonic for flats: "Battle Ends And Down Goes Charles' Father"

    Circle of Fifths:

  • Starting from C major, add one sharp moving clockwise (G, D, A, E, B, F#, C#)
  • Starting from C major, add one flat moving counterclockwise (F, B♭, E♭, A♭, D♭, G♭, C♭)
Natural Minor Scale (Aeolian Mode)

Pattern: Whole – Half – Whole – Whole – Half – Whole – Whole

  • A Natural Minor: A – B – C – D – E – F – G – A
  • The relative minor of any major key is three scale degrees below (or on the sixth degree)

    Relationship: Each major key has a relative minor with the same key signature.

  • C Major / A Minor (0 sharps/flats)
  • G Major / E Minor (1 sharp)
  • F Major / D Minor (1 flat)
Harmonic Minor Scale

Pattern: Whole – Half – Whole – Whole – Half – Whole + Half – Half

  • A Harmonic Minor: A – B – C – D – E – F – G# – A
  • The raised seventh degree (G#) creates the leading tone necessary for V chords
Melodic Minor Scale

Ascending: Whole – Half – Whole – Whole – Whole – Whole – Half

  • A Melodic Minor (ascending): A – B – C – D – E – F# – G# – A

    Descending: Same as natural minor

  • A Melodic Minor (descending): A – G – F – E – D – C – B – A
Minor Key Signatures
  • The key signature shows the NATURAL minor scale
  • Harmonic and melodic minor raise pitches with accidentals
  • The dominant chord (V) in minor requires an accidental to raise the leading tone

Interval Inversions

When you invert an interval (move the bottom note up an octave or the top note down):

  • Perfect ↔ Perfect
  • Major ↔ Minor
  • Augmented ↔ Diminished
  • The sum of the interval number and its inversion = 9 (e.g., a 3rd inverts to a 6th)
Compound Intervals

Intervals larger than an octave are called compound intervals:

  • A 10th = an octave + a 3rd
  • A 9th = an octave + a 2nd
  • Compound intervals function the same as their simple equivalents in analysis
Consonant vs. Dissonant Intervals

Consonant: Perfect unisons, octaves, fifths, fourths (the P4 can be dissonant depending on context); major and minor thirds and sixths Dissonant: Seconds, sevenths, all augmented and diminished intervals, the tritone

Dots

A dot adds half the value of the note:

  • Dotted half = 2 + 1 = 3 beats
  • Dotted quarter = 1 + ½ = 1.5 beats
  • Double dot: adds ¾ of the original value
Ties

A tie connects two notes of the same pitch across a beat or barline, combining their durations.

Time Signatures

Simple Time (beat divides into 2):

  • 2/4: 2 beats per measure; quarter note = 1 beat
  • 3/4: 3 beats per measure; quarter note = 1 beat (waltz)
  • 4/4: 4 beats per measure; quarter note = 1 beat (common time, C)

    Compound Time (beat divides into 3):

  • 6/8: 2 beats per measure (dotted quarter); eighth notes divide the beat into 3
  • 9/8: 3 beats per measure (dotted quarter)
  • 12/8: 4 beats per measure (dotted quarter)

    To determine simple vs. compound: Divide the top number by 3.

  • If it divides evenly → compound time (6/8, 9/8, 12/8)
  • If it does NOT divide evenly → simple time (2/4, 3/4, 4/4)
Meter Types
  • Duple: 2 beats per measure (2/4, 6/8)
  • Triple: 3 beats per measure (3/4, 9/8)
  • Quadruple: 4 beats per measure (4/4, 12/8)
Syncopation

Rhythmic emphasis on a normally weak beat or between beats, creating rhythmic interest and tension.


6. Transposition

Transposition moves a passage higher or lower while maintaining the same intervallic relationships.

Methods:

  1. By interval: Move every note by the same interval
  2. By scale degree: Maintain the same scale degrees in the new key
  3. By clef: Change the clef (advanced technique)
Key Terms for Unit 1
  • Enharmonic: Notes that sound the same but are spelled differently
  • Diatonic: Notes belonging to the current scale/key
  • Chromatic: Notes outside the current scale/key
  • Half step / whole step: The smallest intervals in Western music
  • Octave: Interval of 8 notes; frequency doubles

Important for minor keys: The v chord is minor (natural minor). To create a dominant-functioning V chord (major), raise the third of the v chord — this is the harmonic minor scale's raised seventh degree.

A seventh chord is a four-note chord built by stacking thirds: root, third, fifth, and seventh.

3. Roman Numeral Analysis
Rules for Roman Numerals
  • Major chords: Uppercase (I, IV, V)
  • Minor chords: Lowercase (ii, iii, vi)
  • Diminished chords: Lowercase with ° (vii°)
  • Augmented chords: Uppercase with + (III+ in harmonic minor)
Inversion Notation
  • I6 = first inversion (third in bass)
  • I6/4 = second inversion (fifth in bass)
  • V6/5 = V7 first inversion
  • V4/3 = V7 second inversion
  • V4/2 = V7 third inversion
Chord Function

Chords are grouped by their function relative to the tonic:

Tonic Function (T): I, vi (and iii in some contexts)

  • These chords share scale degrees 1 and 3 with the tonic
  • Provide stability and rest

    Subdominant Function (SD or PD for "predominant"): ii, IV (and vi in some contexts)

  • These chords lead to the dominant
  • ii is the most common subdominant chord in major keys
  • Provide motion away from tonic

    Dominant Function (D): V, vii°

  • These chords have the strongest pull toward the tonic
  • Contain the leading tone (scale degree 7)
  • V7 is the strongest dominant chord
Functional Progression: T → PD → D → T
  • I → ii → V → I (most common classical progression)

4. Cadences
Types of Cadences

Authentic Cadences (V → I or V → i):

  • Perfect Authentic Cadence (PAC): V → I with the soprano landing on scale degree 1 (do)
  • Imperfect Authentic Cadence (IAC): V → I with the soprano landing on scale degree 3 (mi) or 5 (sol)

    Half Cadence (HC): Any chord → V

  • The music pauses on V, creating an "open" feeling
  • Often ends the first phrase of a period

    Deceptive Cadence (DC): V → vi (or other non-tonic chord)

  • The listener expects I but gets vi instead
  • Creates surprise and prolongation of the phrase

    Plagal Cadence (PC): IV → I

  • The "Amen" cadence
  • Common in hymns and gospel music
  • Less strong than an authentic cadence
Cadence Identification

When analyzing a score, look at the final two chords of a phrase:

  • If it ends on V → it's a half cadence
  • If it ends on I → check the penultimate chord (V = authentic, IV = plagal)
  • If V goes to vi → deceptive cadence
  • If soprano lands on 1 with V → I = PAC
  • If soprano lands on 3 or 5 with V → I = IAC
5. Identifying Chords
Steps for Chord Identification
  1. Identify the key signature — this tells you the major key (and its relative minor)
  2. Look at the notes in the chord — write them all down
  3. Rearrange the notes in thirds (stack from bottom to top)
  4. Identify the root — the bottom note of the stacked thirds
  5. Determine the quality — major, minor, diminished, augmented
  6. Assign the Roman numeral — based on scale degree and quality
  7. Check for inversions — which note is in the bass?
  8. Check for seventh chords — is there a fourth note?
Quick Identification Tips
  • A chord with all naturals in C major context = C major (I)
  • A chord with F# = likely G major (V) in C major or D major (I) in D major
  • The last chord of a piece is almost always the tonic (I or i)
  • Look for the leading tone (scale degree 7) — it's usually part of V or vii°

  • Same voice pair: Any interval is acceptable between Bass and Tenor
  • Adjacent upper voices (S-A, A-T): Must be less than an octave apart (except S and T can be more than an octave in open structure)
2. Doubling Rules
Root Position Triads (5/3)
  • Preferred: Double the root
  • Acceptable: Double the fifth (but NOT in diminished or augmented triads)
  • Avoid: Double the third (especially in major I and IV chords)
  • Exceptions: In first inversion (6) chords, doubling the bass (the chord third) is preferred
First Inversion Triads (6/3)
  • Preferred: Double the bass note (which is the chord third)
  • Avoid: Double the root or fifth unless necessary
Second Inversion Triads (6/4)
